Happy 2018 !

I had been talking with a load of people that felt like 2017 went by soo fast but for me personally, it was as steady as I needed it to be. There were some rocky roads, but what I am eternally grateful for is the lessons learned in 2017, monetary vs trusting individuals; starting some new and exciting things that I would never imagined to have done and truly running my own pace. Speaking with my chest in negotiations and actively focusing on the things that I love despite butting heads with those people who I use to be their personal yes-man to.

November and December, however went extremely fast, I couldn't keep up with my business and YouTube, had the chance to write an amazing piece on my thoughts of what Alexandra Shulman wrote for the BoF, and received such great feedback anddddddd launched my 1st solo project independent from a company. Through the last two months of 2017, I learnt similar things about myself when i was living and working in NYC but at a London capacity. Lessons were familiar and solved much quicker because my contacts were based in the city, some 3 -6 miles away from me at the very most. Also, not like I care anymore to observe - but you have to check yourself - but realising your 'friends' that made the excuse of not supporting you get highlighted in green (I hate green highlighter lol) as absolute BS'ers.

I wouldn't trade 2017 for a peaceful mind, I was rattled but came out with my frontal still in tact and onlooking to the future with high hopes ordained by God Almighty (you better watch out)

Resolutions though ? More like promises

Entertaining comes at a cost : If you don't have much value for the moment I am about to engage with you, I will not participate.
Enjoy: life, flip I'm 24 in a couple days and the two things my mum continually asks is to have much more fun and when are I going to start dating ?
Prioritise : Happiness, I'm a self-confessed workaholic, intended me-time is essential, healthy and well deserved

If you haven't been following my social media, you have been missing out ! I launched my first project with the help of cool and encouraging black creatives for a black market. It got featured in the Voice newspaper print and online and the event (as my first ever) was outstanding. Check out the coverage online and don't forget to follow BlackMarket_UK
Also, the phrase 'psychology and fashion has been out in the atmosphere lately, Capital Moments gave me the chance to write my views on the topic within fashion. Here's the link

'If there was one thing I could tell my younger self, it would be to intern"

I have a new video out ! Have you subscribed to my YouTube channel ?

If after watching my video about apply to LCF has not altered your vision of becoming a student at LCF, or a communication based subject majoring with fashion as degree, now lets talk about wisdom before you actually acquire the knowledge of your field ( because as the great Robyn Fenty said,-)

A term that benefits this post, some may say that you don't need to intern, the economy is too tight to work for free in our generation. I get it, everybody understands and dare I say that it stands as a disgusting matter some overlook but it is what makes the skin harder.

If you have seen an advertisement for a PR role, you may have seen a line like ' no two days are the same' ; add in the back of your mind how also, no two days are worth the same. Sometimes you will be asked to come in on a Sunday morning (via text from your manager who is out of office, out of country for the weekend) and you have to therefore host your hangover in you heels running around London to pick up a look to send to another shoot because you actually don't know if your uber would be reimburse before payday.

These last minute, time consuming, nearly wanting to curse somebody but should you make a noise you will cry and mess up your make-up are invaluable experiences that no classroom or 30 slide presentation can show, so take the time to appreciate or rule out what you will and will not allow.

My personal opinion, take at least one and say you've done it

Hi YouTube !

Hi Guys! It's currently bank holiday weekend over in London so everyone is pretty chilled towards the end of May. I wish I could say May was a pretty relaxed month but it has been filled with wondrous activities, opportunities and a few hardcore sessions of editing birthing my first ever YouTube video !

Yes, I am on YouTube ^_^

I have always loved editing but I felt so comfortable behind the camera and playing about with editing software at university and college. But speaking with my girls from The Body Studio at Selfridges (we all no longer work there but we still identity ourselves as that), they always persuaded me to upload a stream of vlogs, create video content to tie in with my blog and add some more personality. I never felt like I would belong on YouTube but after some great ides, brainstorming and a sunny morning in London, i filmed my first with Jonathan , hopefully I will be sharing new video content about my experience with LCF, Fashion PR, tips and university life about twice a month (every other week) ! I hope you will enjoy this extended version of me and do feel free to share any topics that you would want me to film.

All Black Everything ?

It has been well over a week since Gucci released visuals for its pre fall campaign featuring solely black model cast. The moment I saw this, I immediately felt like Todd Tucker in the scene where Mama Joyce shouts out ' my favourite person in the whole world'.

Overall, when I view the launch of campaigns as like everyone who looks for the artistic direction within the campaign; and of course it was amazing, but I am / was in between the state of being confused at the decision of an all black cast ... My fellow industry working 'crew' (as in friends I went to fashion school with and those working within industry sharing their thoughts) thought I was looking into it a little too deep and the non industry ones simply stated that Gucci are promoting black people, be happy and don't make it a big thing.

Since Gucci has been taken over by Alessandro Michele, I consider the brand as THE empire of street style. For around 3-4 seasons, throughout all of the major fashion capital cities; you will without doubt spot a Gucci piece. I remember Dior had their phase under Raf Simons with the micro bags, bejewelled sneakers from couture right up to the ‘So Real’ glasses! Unlike many of the luxury brands who have their statement pieces feature as part of the upcoming and booming street style ensembles, Gucci masters as way of creating pieces that are not considered as 'IT' accessory therefore enhancing its longevity.

You have to admit, before Michele came to the house, what other brand could you solely look for and feel complete with a piece containing rhinestones, sequins, and overall, a quintessential “more is more” vibe? Gucci’s flamboyance perfects the reflection of the attitudes currently towards fashion in today's society. 'More is more' is wonderful, and its construction is carefully amassed.

I clearly remember Shiona Turnini on instastories clearly displaying her views, which I would also share and point out and I completely agree with her views and encourage everyone to be 'woke' about this situation. I even somewhat compare it to the Pepsi advert that has now been removed but within a more refined and cleverly yet typical fashion etiquette

The act of accumulation is something you would think happens the most whence a project so effective like a front cover/main fashion story, campaign or others   you would think right? Earlier on this year, announced through WWD, "In the past two years, we have implemented a complete turnaround of our company, following our mantra of being the voice of self-expression," he said. "Attracting, retaining and promoting talent, while celebrating ethnic, age, sexual and gender diversity, sexual orientation and gender identity across the company, is our mission."

But what does that mean when the only person of colour that looks like me is Beyonce and the amazingly uber cool 5 year old Blue Ivy? I mean Beyonce is a lot but only endorsing a black artist like her is not enough. The ideology within the minds of the consumer (whether you heavily consume luxury fashion or subconsciously are aware of topics within this industry) is that a 'congratulations' should be in order because the colour is displayed as the end result. But can you really look at this and not think for a second about exploitation of the worrying subject of race within fashion? A total of 9 looks out of 119 worn by models of colour for Gucci FW17 does not make sense in comparison to a whole black cast expressing the 'soul scene' throwback to the retro 1960s "underground Northern Soul movement".
As a young black professional I know how beautiful it is to be black but disheartening for a wide organisation that I artistically respect to take a form of beauty that I identify with and project as if it is a trend that would die out (Pre fall will not be talked about in 3 seasons time, only as reference to be built on the current 'booming' trend). A fellow Olivia discussed how luxury brands are exploring the new normal form of marketing new product/collection.

Do you feel these strategies are used for the culture or are they actually for YOUR culture?

Guess the Designer - Farfetch

Happy Humpday everyone !

I received such a cool email today from Laryssa at Farfetch about a new game that has been recently developed. In this interactive game, you will see a range of products and you have a certain amount of time to guess the designer as quickly as possible. This is such a cool and fun way to play against friends online and in person to see who really are the fashion experts in your group as well as a chance to win from £200-£500.

So I want to know who really are the 'designer' expert readers are ! Comment below and let me know your score ! Good luck ^_^

Fashion and Technology in 2015

This is a delayed post that you are about to read because initially was I had wrote was was really long. Though I love sharing my thoughts, I would not want you to read something like an essay in a short post. I condensed it down a lot, so I hope you do enjoy the little of bit of what I love in PR, that is fashion and technology.

During my last year of uni (2015), I became very conscious of the world of technology raised in conversation with fashion. I would never consider myself a tech guru, and certainly as a teenager growing up, I never observed or wonder about the importance of technology and fashion together resulted in too , but now more than ever; I realised that it is something you have to be ‘observant’ over, and I'm going to talk about what types of technology the fashion world were using in 2015.

Burberry
Burberry on Instagram.
To be honest, everything involving technology that Burberry do is incredible and forward thinking in that moment in time, but I really would just like to highlight Burberry whey they took to Instagram to show behind the scene footage of the SS12 show using the iPhone 5s. it was such a beautiful and new way of seeing the ready-to-wear instantly within the world of social media.

Truly the premature stages of what we are now seeing as live streaming and etc. Burberry using Instagram showed how great the quality of the camera on the iPhone was as well as reaching out to Burberry (and iPhone) audiences further than just on one platform (shared through Facebook and Twitter). Burberry truly will remain as one of the leading fashion find is that prove technology has a place in luxury and lifestyle.

         Burberry on Snapchat.
Fast forward to 2015; they have understood the changes and attitudes within social media, take a look at the exclusive Snapchat stories - instead of having 15 edited classy and almost editorial finish posts on Instagram pictures, to last forever; use on Snapchat which allows instant reactions in a ‘story’ / ‘journey’ format; executing the beauty of ‘real life’ behind the scene footage ranging from staff attempted to close-ups of the interior decor / show-space and more. The beauty of Snapchat is the photos only last for 24 hours and then they are gone! That's why so many brands are using Snapchat because Snapchat that last for a day to 3 days is far more effective than Instagram and edited glossy editorial photos to last forever but only to then be judged by the amount of likes, comments and shares.

Burberry is such a good brand for a case study within PR, I used Burberry all the time within elements of social media understanding at uni. These photos were all screen shot on my iPhone during SS16 show.

The other brand I would use is of course, Dior :). Feel free to check out my FMP  (pg 48)

20th Birthday - DIY invitations

Building up to my 20th birthday, I was in two minds on whether to celebrate it alone , with a few , or with many. I don't really like the idea of ageing, I love growing up, but during my 19th year, family referred to me ageing instead of maturing (harsh I know lol). Surprisingly (The reason why I said surprisingly is because I'm never a last minute type girl) I made my decision to celebrate with a few friends, and somehow I'd had the colour blue in mind for my 20th birthday. Much like tiffany blue, so I thought - ok, "how shall we play along with that?" and looked to pinterest (if you ever need inspiration, first look on pinterest THEN google)  and found NOTHING ! The only ideas that appear are to do with wedding baby boy invitations - but a 20th birthday for Olivia-Zara does not quite fit with wedding bells or dummies; so I decided to create a tiffany invitation for myself.

I call it 'The Deconstructed Tiffany'

For 6 people, I used:
- A5 Black envelope - ebay (pack of 50)
-One glue-stick
- 5 metres (1cm thick) satin ribbon - Morleys in Brixton (you can get them cheaper from ebay or John Lewis
- 2 packs of white A6 cars and envelope
- 6 pieces of tiffany blue (-ish) A7 cards
- Glitter ( but I simply used my Victoria Secret shimmer spray - because it also smells nice ^_^)

So the reason why it is named the 'deconstructed tiffany' because I was inspired by the actual tiffany box, but the famous black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at tiffany's. So I used the ribbon to tie the envelope which referred to the movie and kept it ultra simple on the other envelope with a similar font to tiffany.

To add a personal touch for my friends, I simply addressed their name with a font similar to the Tiffany and co font (they actually have their own font) and there are two closest fonts which are :

- Engravers MT (utilising small caps)
-Century Schoolbook

Ta Da !!!

Let me know what you think , would have done something a little different ?

Rohmir SS14

Yesterday, I attended the Rohmir SS14 show at Freemasons Hall in Holborn.

The show was absolutely amazing ! What a beautiful collection, my favourite piece was the yellow jacket, I'm excited with all the colours (especially yellow) this season, and animal print has return yet again, but Rohmir had taken a graceful yet elegant approach. I was also amazed by the hair and make-up which complimented the overall silhouette with the finishing touch by Morelle Davidson jewellery on each model.

To view the finale walk, go to my instagram page as that's where I filmed it ^_^

It was a lovely way to end London fashion week, I had interned at two shows, helped put on House of Oshae as well as attending a show. Sweet.

Next up will be press days in around October/November and then before you know it, AW14 shows will be at a ready in February next year !

In Moda Fashion Showcase - Kitty Ferreira

During Graduate fashion week, I also had the privilege of attending the In Moda Showcase which is an event that exists to provide a platform for upcoming designers to showcase their new designs. It's their second 'season' and I had an excellent time, I came late, but just in time to engage with the preview of the new and up-coming brand, Kitty Ferreira. Check out the interview I conducted with the head Designer, Valerie Goode !

Who is Kitty Ferreira ?

Kitty Ferreira is a carbon neutral boutique womenswear brand with the added benefit of being sustainably sourced and produced in the UK. Each piece made from our hand dyed silks varies slightly from one another giving a real exclusive, individual feel. The name comes from my late grandmother, so it's also fitting that it's a brand about values, an antithesis to frivolous throw away fashion.

What does being ethical mean to you?

I grew up in a household of 'make and make-do'. Up-cycling is a natural part of my heritage, whether it's my mother re-using fabrics in the home to make a new dress or a new pair of curtains, or walking down the street in my mother's home country and literally being able to have your breakfast as you walk, picking( organic) fruit off the trees. Being ethical in a fashion term, is therefore about making a more conscious decision on where and how you shop. I like to think fashion can transcend an era, style and tell a story about values.

I have the utmost respect for my elders (sometimes they make better conversationalists too!). I like to think Kitty Ferreira can be worn by the 20 and 60 yr old just as well. It's a brand for women only. We're working on telling women's stories from women's perspectives, and not as we've seen in the media, from a man's ideal. What a woman feels to be sexy is actually quite different to the male perspective. But more importantly than all of this is the message I'd like to convey is that, "you're perfectly fine as you are". I come from a household of self confidence- happiness from within. When L'Oreal says, "because you're worth it", actually what they're saying is, if you look like me, only then you are worth it. We're addressing the so called 'aspirational' (unattainable/ unrealistic)  images geared at women ... Kitty Ferreira is not an aspirational brand, but one based on values.
Why do you feel that it is good to support sustainable independent designers like yourself? What makes you different from the mainstream companies?

I think we're generally quite tired of these so called aspirational images. Abercrombie & Fitch is the perfect example of our nemesis of this day. Diametrically opposing Kitty Ferreira's ethos. When you're young, new and small, like we are, you can do things differently. I hope that it will just be an organic process that others see and understand what we stand for and support us as a result. Plus, producing in London and the UK and being carbon neutral is very important to us.

Where in the world are the fabrics made?

We only source in the UK.  Upcycled fabrics are also bought here. We would never think of making a new fabric from a mill as a lot of other designers do, as we believe there are enough fabrics out there already.
When did you decide to become not just a designer, but and ethical designer?

I was living in Guangzhou, China, the manufacturing hub of the world, working as a designer. Whilst there are great traditional values, such as the elderly are much respected and culturally they seem to have a healthy mindset toward prosperity, there was this other side I witnessed and generally fuelled by the West's need to produce everything as cheap as possible. It really divides the country. The 'new money' drives around in the latest car, the traffic and pollution is horrendous; the vanity is a bit unpalatable - pale skin is a sign of beauty it seems. I left there thinking it's not a place for me to manufacture. I wanted to keep manufacturing in the UK, whist intertwining the traditional values I also witnessed.
How important is heritage in your designs?

Very important. My parental heritage gives a real perspective on ethics and upcycling. Being a born and bred Londoner, a city girl, it's important to go back to your roots, as it were, in order to define and solve sustainable issues. You'll find that your parents and their parents were practising it long before it became a fashionable term. I remember my uncle incredulous at the price of the pomegranate when they became the fashionable fruit- he used to play cricket with it in his home country!  There's British style and then there is London style- I hope to bring that London look to my pieces. Currently the pieces are quite classic but easy to wear, to infuse into your existing wardrobe. I'm looking forward to injecting more edgier pieces as we go along.

Briefly describe your creation process

I'm inspired by nature, movies, music, but more-so  by people, hence the values brought into the brand's ethos. I'll research, create mood boards, design specs; our sampling team is very good at turning 2d sketches into 3d samples.
_____________

Did I mention that the Valerie has used pomegranate and onion skins to make these? I bet you'd think more about throwing those red onion skins away next time your chopping up your seasoning !

Valerie will be launching the full SS14 collection this September and the SS shows, you keep your eyes peeled, and follow the twitter , facebook and blogsite. I like the idea of ethical and sustainable, I had come across the topic and find that most people my age are not too keen on the idea, simply because of the expenses compared to the quick and accessible fast fashion stores from the high street.

BUT! If you had the money, would you engage in this mindset? Or do we simply live in a world where we care more about our look than the damaged look on planet earth? What are your thoughts?

I absolutely loved the collection and would definitely invest in this brand, it's something which I have not seen before ! ethical and sustainable brands have come my way, but not like this ! This won't be the last time I feature KF on Miss Olivia-Zara !

The Aroxta Trunk Show

Today I went along to the Aroxta trunk show at the Marriot Hotel in Grosvenor Square.

AROXTA.com is an online luxury fashion retailer who offer the 'style-savvy woman' the hottest looks of the season from international cutting-edge labels and in the Mayfair room were a ray of stunning products for viewers to see ! I collection of limited edition and one off pieces from various brands based in Indonesia and Singapore.

I had the pleasure of viewing a few of most girls favourite clothing pieces ... shoes, accessories and purses !

All made out of skin, any skin you think of, they would most probably be able to make it for you ;)

Had my eye on the black bag since I got in lol

I have to say, looking at the cuffs and feeling the different textures were my highlight of the day. They come in so many different ways which is refreshing because you will most definitely stand out from the typical person who is rocking a wannabe Hermes cuff !

I know it looks like summer is not returning to the UK anytime soon, but if you are heading to another country or live somewhere hot ! Sporting either of these beauties would be so cool to go with many fun and stylish looks !
