In Moda Fashion Showcase - Kitty Ferreira

During Graduate fashion week, I also had the privilege of attending the In Moda Showcase which is an event that exists to provide a platform for upcoming designers to showcase their new designs. It's their second 'season' and I had an excellent time, I came late, but just in time to engage with the preview of the new and up-coming brand, Kitty Ferreira. Check out the interview I conducted with the head Designer, Valerie Goode !

Who is Kitty Ferreira ?

Kitty Ferreira is a carbon neutral boutique womenswear brand with the added benefit of being sustainably sourced and produced in the UK. Each piece made from our hand dyed silks varies slightly from one another giving a real exclusive, individual feel. The name comes from my late grandmother, so it's also fitting that it's a brand about values, an antithesis to frivolous throw away fashion.

What does being ethical mean to you?

I grew up in a household of 'make and make-do'. Up-cycling is a natural part of my heritage, whether it's my mother re-using fabrics in the home to make a new dress or a new pair of curtains, or walking down the street in my mother's home country and literally being able to have your breakfast as you walk, picking( organic) fruit off the trees. Being ethical in a fashion term, is therefore about making a more conscious decision on where and how you shop. I like to think fashion can transcend an era, style and tell a story about values.

I have the utmost respect for my elders (sometimes they make better conversationalists too!). I like to think Kitty Ferreira can be worn by the 20 and 60 yr old just as well. It's a brand for women only. We're working on telling women's stories from women's perspectives, and not as we've seen in the media, from a man's ideal. What a woman feels to be sexy is actually quite different to the male perspective. But more importantly than all of this is the message I'd like to convey is that, "you're perfectly fine as you are". I come from a household of self confidence- happiness from within. When L'Oreal says, "because you're worth it", actually what they're saying is, if you look like me, only then you are worth it. We're addressing the so called 'aspirational' (unattainable/ unrealistic)  images geared at women ... Kitty Ferreira is not an aspirational brand, but one based on values.
Why do you feel that it is good to support sustainable independent designers like yourself? What makes you different from the mainstream companies?

I think we're generally quite tired of these so called aspirational images. Abercrombie & Fitch is the perfect example of our nemesis of this day. Diametrically opposing Kitty Ferreira's ethos. When you're young, new and small, like we are, you can do things differently. I hope that it will just be an organic process that others see and understand what we stand for and support us as a result. Plus, producing in London and the UK and being carbon neutral is very important to us.

Where in the world are the fabrics made?

We only source in the UK.  Upcycled fabrics are also bought here. We would never think of making a new fabric from a mill as a lot of other designers do, as we believe there are enough fabrics out there already.
When did you decide to become not just a designer, but and ethical designer?

I was living in Guangzhou, China, the manufacturing hub of the world, working as a designer. Whilst there are great traditional values, such as the elderly are much respected and culturally they seem to have a healthy mindset toward prosperity, there was this other side I witnessed and generally fuelled by the West's need to produce everything as cheap as possible. It really divides the country. The 'new money' drives around in the latest car, the traffic and pollution is horrendous; the vanity is a bit unpalatable - pale skin is a sign of beauty it seems. I left there thinking it's not a place for me to manufacture. I wanted to keep manufacturing in the UK, whist intertwining the traditional values I also witnessed.
How important is heritage in your designs?

Very important. My parental heritage gives a real perspective on ethics and upcycling. Being a born and bred Londoner, a city girl, it's important to go back to your roots, as it were, in order to define and solve sustainable issues. You'll find that your parents and their parents were practising it long before it became a fashionable term. I remember my uncle incredulous at the price of the pomegranate when they became the fashionable fruit- he used to play cricket with it in his home country!  There's British style and then there is London style- I hope to bring that London look to my pieces. Currently the pieces are quite classic but easy to wear, to infuse into your existing wardrobe. I'm looking forward to injecting more edgier pieces as we go along.

Briefly describe your creation process

I'm inspired by nature, movies, music, but more-so  by people, hence the values brought into the brand's ethos. I'll research, create mood boards, design specs; our sampling team is very good at turning 2d sketches into 3d samples.
_____________

Did I mention that the Valerie has used pomegranate and onion skins to make these? I bet you'd think more about throwing those red onion skins away next time your chopping up your seasoning !

Valerie will be launching the full SS14 collection this September and the SS shows, you keep your eyes peeled, and follow the twitter , facebook and blogsite. I like the idea of ethical and sustainable, I had come across the topic and find that most people my age are not too keen on the idea, simply because of the expenses compared to the quick and accessible fast fashion stores from the high street.

BUT! If you had the money, would you engage in this mindset? Or do we simply live in a world where we care more about our look than the damaged look on planet earth? What are your thoughts?

I absolutely loved the collection and would definitely invest in this brand, it's something which I have not seen before ! ethical and sustainable brands have come my way, but not like this ! This won't be the last time I feature KF on Miss Olivia-Zara !

ALCHEMY

Clara - Iman (Modelling the garments) - Rosie

My friend Clara had invited me along to her fashion show with her fellow students at Chelsea College of Arts. The BA Textile Design students had a project which involved putting on a fashion showcase. It was called 'ALCHEMY',  featuring a range of textile fabrics across all types of specialisms of textiles like print / weave and knit. Clara had created the upper garment and had partnered up with classmate and friend (on the right) Rosie who designed the bottom half

I decided to ask them to tell me about their thoughts of the project and  how they went about it. Check it out here :

I really did enjoy the show, the only part I was upset about was the bad choice of lighting, so I unfortunately can not show still shots of the look right now or even the other looks from the class ! But I will be visiting them soon ... so do keep an eye of this post which I will soon update again

Africa Fashion Week 2012 #AFWL2012 part 1 of day 2

So yesterday, I was lucky enough to visit Africa Week London 2012.
I had won a VIP ticket c/o Fashions Finest and was extremely excited as last year, I was in Jamaica whilst this event was going on and not able to attend. Gladly, this year I made it to the event which took place in Spitalfields Market, so I had an idea of how the venue would look like due to the fact that I attended Alternative Fashion Week earlier this year; but that could NOT be compared to this (obviously) because of the different type of designers, exhibitors and overall, turn out ! Unfortunately, I won't be able to put everything that I captured on my blog, but do check out the facebook and tumblr page's for other shots that I'll put on those sites. Also, do check out my youtube channel as I have some filmed footage that I took on my iPhone.

But yeah, here are some photo's of designers and their collections ... and just a little more of what I saw at AFWL

VIR2UOUS presents Fashion Exposed

Hey guys ...another fashion show review !!!

On Monday, I went along the RichMix ( I don't know if its rich mix or richmix but back to the story !) in Bethnal Green( east London) to visit this show which I had heard about from a friend.

As regular readers and followers on twitter, i have been DYING !!!! to go to a show where it's not all JUST fashion, but letting my hair down (even though I wore a bun loool) and me not being so serious AND ever so critical .... I would like to thank the organizers of the event a big THANK YOU as it was a success and I did enjoy my time there ^_^

SOOOO for what you all have come for ... here is what my night was like !!

The show started off with a performance by the lovely @whitneysingaah and her guitarist Dionne then opened with the designer Proverbs 31 ... a jewelry brand which defines chic, elegant and classic fitting for the modern woman during the day or night ...

I liked the fact that the collection showed ethnicity and was not the typical 'tie-dyed/african material wrapped around a mold' or the typical peacock feather ... Quite unique !!!

Afterwards, we were presented with the next collection AGR and then the excitement mood was mellowed down to the tones poetic tales of 'Chaleboy the Poet' ... the atmosphere was so calm, yet exciting !!! loved it dude *sipps orange juice*... afterwards, 'Cross Eagle' which consists of clothing ranging from everyday jackets for men to t-shirts ... It's something that will suit many guys of today and finishes outfits with that 'casual luxury' look.

Soon afterwards, we were pumped up with the next designer, 'CLEE CLOTHING' ... now I've heard and seen the designs and have always wanted to see them feature in a show ... and now i got to !!! (happy livvyy loool) So the collection is definitely inspired by the urban surrounding in which we live in and come from, so it will suit many people that have that style which strongly reflects their personality from the roots (deep within) with a dash of style !!! I loved the Ghana material hot pants (just need to eat more so my bottom
would be able to fill the shorts )

And after that, we were introduce to one of my favourites from the night !! Even though the man spoke SO fast, (leaving it impossible to allow me to find out where I can find out more about him) but maybe He only done it because he felt it was a need for him to not talk for his creations ... as they literally DO speak for themselves". Love his take on using African material in fusion with European contemporary designs... He described that his collection is solely for the satisfaction of the woman .... hmmm, I think its merely like another Louboutin fiasco ... even though it's made for a woman to be sexy/beautiful, its the eye of the fox(i mean male) that is truly 'wowed' by His collection... Anyway, I'll find him and will let you know more about him ^_^  !!!

Tribal Gem was up next and I loved how the collection embraces not only two cultures which symbolise the designers roots and upbringing, but fuses two traditional materials and makes a beautiful vibrant collection. Both designers are British but backgrounds are from Africa (East and North).... fell in love with the blue jumpsuit.

Left hand, right foot was after (remember them from stomp out fashion show?) and the collection was completely different to the last one I had seen!!! Toni's (the designer) new collection proved daring cuts, leather and black are essential to a woman's wardrobe !! I'm telling you, if I never had a big chest, I would have her make that low cut jumpsuit ... I predict that during one season, that low cut neckline will be as big as African prints .. so I suggest that you start investing !!!

Finally the end of the show came, and last but not least was Ella Bethal, a beautiful collection with soul and class constructed by an inspirational woman fulfilling her purpose... the story behind her collections are always that her vision out of her purpose is being revealed through her clothing. I didn't take pictures, but recorded it on my iPhone instead ... so check it out on my Youtube page x

Also, letting you know before you think .... the entertainment is all on my instagram  which is oliviazara ... DO check it out as you will get to see the marvelous oreo cupcake that I had to go on stage and walk for alongside the Azonto Kings performing boom boom TAH and A DOT Comedian ^_^.

So even though it was all fun, the part that kinda mad me :/ was lighting and positioning .... I won't state anything in much detail as you all will know, it might go on into a rant LOOOL ... but yeah ... thanks for reading ^_^

Also, [how incredibly rude of me,] THANK you for the amazing hosts JNR and Mika ... really made the evening really good

Alternative Fashion Week- Day 3

Alternative Fashion Week runs from the 16th-21st of April 2012. The ALTERNATIVE ARTS is an arts organisation based in Spitalfields, East London investing and showcasing new designers to the public producing a diverse arts event including fashion, photography, literature, music, dance, exhibitions and plenty more - so don't think that it's just another young'in trying to make it into the fashion world and 'claiming to be different' -lol ... It's worth a trip ... you NEVER know what inspiration you may find there .. and good deals ;)

This year was my first time going and as you all know, I did not expect ANYTHING (well, I tried not to) but I was hoping for something exciting and exciting it WAS !!!
Unlike most fashion shows, Alternative Fashion Week is truly filled by live performances from all aspects of art like designers from Italy to Sri Lanka (just to name a few).

If your passing by Brick Lane and always looking fro inspiration, be sure to head down at 1.15pm this week to see the interesting designers catering for different types of taste like the vintage, modern, futuristic, antique and one-off sellers from the stalls.

If your a photographer, journalist or any other type of PR be sure you are seated (or stood) in an ideal spot (best thing is to get down there about 10-15 mins early) so you could capture the detailed stunning pieces. Or if your a style hunter, be sure that your camera and notepad are with you at all times as you are bound to find someone trotting around the area checking out the show. You can even go and talk to the designers, models, hair and make-up stylists and conduct an interview of your own.

Spitalfield Market this week, is NOT here for fashion, but is giving you the opportunity to interact with amazing people from the textiles trade to art collectors ... it's also a great place for social networking .

Here are some photo's that I took from the day ... could only stay for like an hour :( *cries*

Footsteps Charity Fashion Show

Footsteps Charity Fashion Show was last week Thursday (the night after Next Loop Mania -whatever) and to be honest, my excitement went from seven to about minus three thousand. My friend Shamel and I were SO close to not even going but we had faith in the Lord and my gosh did he DELIVER !!!

But some background information about the cause . Footsteps Charity Fashion Show are raising money for a little boy called Aiden, at 19 months he he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. He now needs £60,000 for an operation that will help him to walk.

 1st Designer - Shauna

Shauna's collection is based on cultural/heraldic identity, specifically looking at what it means to be Black British since the Windrush years. This collection was for her final year graduation catwalk show and since then, she has been working on a new collection.
I really loved the green cut out dress ! The collection was really classy and caters for a range of women, the combination of ankara fabrics with contemporary designs worked well

2nd Designer - Shelique

JBrown1971 is a stylist that caters to a wide audience offering a touch of class with individual personality for every client. They start with the basics of style and evaluate it to a much higher level that combines many elements into one.
I REALLY loved the modern twist within the collection, the menswear was TO DIE FOR !!! It had what most males NEED in their wardrobe for attire that would be suitable for the day and night. The pieces are stamped with individuality within the contemporary designs. The contrast between the fabrics also had a sleek finish which was like...totally cool B-)

Designer -Schenelle and Everton

A refreshing view-point on menswear fashion. The collection which is called reboot pushes the creative boundaries and traditional pre-conceptions of menswear design.
I really loved this collection, the colours of the material were mouth-watering , i could really see the futuristic influences behind the collection shown in the designs.

Designer- Honey
www.honeymalaolu.com

An emerging designer that uses Indian and African Influences with a contemporary twist. These beautiful garments are from recycled cultured material.
The whole collection was stunning, loved the tailoring and the fitted jackets. The choice of material and colours worked well with each other and the elegant pieces gave a fluid feel throughout the collection

Last but not least
Designer -Sylvia

Her collection is mainly inspired by feminine shapes and curves from fashionable eras, the 1920's right through to the 1940's is DEFINITELY seen within this collection. The collection consists of a range of styles to shapes, to simple silhouettes borrowing the features of the more glamorous time with a touch of the modern influence from today's fashion.
Oh My Lord ... This collection was SUPERB !!! This collection is what I think 'Angeleye' should look at and study (HARD) .. The collection is for any woman would desires a luxurious ensemble influenced by a 'vintage' look. The designs are obviously borrowed from the past decades BUT are evolved with a modern twist. I loved the accessories that went with the garments , the material, the cut. Like when you sometimes think of vintage clothing from the post war era, you think or classy but glamorous with a little more of sex appeal added into the recipe. There was NO fault with this collection AT all !
I regret no video recording the finale :(
But you can find the Designer on  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sylvia-Preby-Fumu

The whole show was incredible. But the real reason and purpose was to raise money for Aiden. They managed to raise over £1000 on the night. I believe in this cause and feel you guys should join in as well !!! To donate, just click the link below
